Senior Dog Food

A dog is generally considered senior from around 7 years old, although this can vary depending on their breed and size. Smaller breeds tend to live longer and may not be classed as senior until 9 or even 10, while larger breeds can show signs of ageing earlier, sometimes around 6 years. Senior dogs may start to slow down, sleep more, or show changes in appetite and mobility. Adjusting their diet to support joint health, digestion, and overall vitality can help them stay comfortable and happy in their later years.

Both wet and dry food can be suitable for senior dogs, depending on their needs. Wet food is often easier to chew and can help keep older dogs hydrated, especially if they’re less interested in drinking water. Dry food can also be convenient and calorie-dense for dogs who need to maintain weight. The most important thing is choosing a diet that supports ageing joints, digestion, and overall vitality, with high-quality proteins, balanced nutrients, and gentle ingredients that are easy on a senior dog’s tummy.

The amount to feed will depend on your dog’s size, age, and activity level. Each tray has a feeding guide on the back to help you work out the right portion for your pooch, or you can also use our online feeding calculator to work out how much your dog needs each day. Don't forget though, these are just guidelines, so you may need to adjust portions to help maintain an ideal body condition. Once opened, seal and store in the fridge and consume within 2 days.

As dogs age, their metabolism slows and their digestive system changes, so the best senior dog food should be easy to digest, high in quality protein, and balanced with the right vitamins and minerals. Added joint support can also help older dogs stay active. We include extra joint care in our Salmon Dry Food and Turkey Dry Dog Food, pawfect for golden oldies.

Not necessarily. A good-quality adult dog food will provide all the nutrients your dog needs throughout their life. What matters most as they age is monitoring their weight and adjusting portion sizes to match their slower metabolism.

You may notice your senior dog is more alert at mealtimes. They love the routine, so don't be late. Many senior dogs do best with two smaller meals a day, to help stabilise energy levels and support digestion. Some dogs with sensitive tums may benefit from three smaller meals - follow your dogs preferences.

Senior dogs have slower metabolisms and therefore don't need as many calories. The focus should be on quality nutrition, not simply reducing calories. Scrumbles recipes balance energy, protein and gut health for older dogs.
